Car show in Callicoon Center

CALLICOON CENTER, NY — The seventh annual Town of Callicoon Car Show will take place on Sunday, August 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the town park, along with the third annual Beer Belly Barbecue competition. 

Car show exhibitors must register between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Vehicles must remain in position until 3 p.m. to qualify for a trophy. The first 50 registrants will receive dash plaques.

The town is not liable for any damages caused at the show. 

Registration donations are appreciated, and all proceeds go to the park’s playground equipment and maintenance fund.

Rotary’s Monster Run Classic benefits veterans

MONTICELLO, NY — Runners and walkers can register for the 43rd annual Monster Run Classic, to be held on Sunday, August 1. Proceeds will benefit the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition.

The event is run by Monticello Rotary as part of Sullivan County Patriots Day. 

Each year, the event draws hundreds of walkers, runners and spectators from all over New York State. 

There will be 5K, 10K running and 5K walk events for the whole family. Health, wellness and running-related businesses will have information and free screenings on site.

According to Monticello Rotary Club President Dr. Jeff Weinstein, “Too many of our veterans need assistance with heating, food, transportation for medical services, rent and mortgage assistance just to name a few. They have given to us all through their service to our country.”

Learn to make pies 

ONLINE — On Thursday, August 5 at 6 p.m., the E.B. Crawford Public Library presents Kristen White, known as The Chicken Librarian, with her hand pie demonstration. 

White will demonstrate easy steps to create a “very yummy” dessert using ingredients you can find in your pantry, your local farmers’ market, or nearest grocery store. By using a premade crust, you will already have done the hard part; in under an hour, you’ll have a dessert that you made.

White has over 10 years of experience with homesteading. She lives a handmade life while free-ranging on the banks of the Delaware River. 

Registration is required and is limited to 100 registrants. This program will be presented on Zoom and YouTube Live.

New York-style jazz at Harmony in the Woods 

HAWLEY, PA — “New York Weekend” launches at Harmony in the Woods with the Laurie Krauz Quartet on Friday, July 30 and the Nat Osborn Band on Saturday, July 31.

Both shows begin at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m. Parking is available on site and attendees will be directed on where to park. In case of rain, these two performances will take place at the Hawley United Methodist Church.

The Laurie Krauz Quartet, dubbed “Sarah Vaughn meets Bette Midler meets Nina Simone,” offers blues-influenced jazz vocals. Krauz has been named one of the top 525 jazz vocalists of all time in critic Scott Yanow’s “The Jazz Singers.” The quartet features vocalist Krauz, Daryl Kojak (piano), Sean Conley (bass) and Gene Lewin (drums). 

The Nat Osborn Band “combines old Gershwin-era songs with modern sensibilities.” The Brooklyn-based seven-piece band, flanked by a three-piece horn section, takes elements of soul, funk, indie-rock and jazz and weaves them around Osborn’s songs. They’ve opened for the Dave Matthews Band and have played internationally. 

Tickets for the Friday and Saturday evening performances cost $25 and $35, depending on seats chosen. Guests are encouraged to bring their own refreshments and drinks from local area restaurants. Chairs are included for the $35 stage-side seats, and those in $25 hillside seats can rent a chair for $5 or bring their own seating.

Historical walk at Bethel Woods

BETHEL, NY — Walk through history on the Bindy Bazaar trail on Thursday, August 5, starting at 6 p.m. Eleanor Hein, landscape preservation fellow at Bethel Woods, will relate Woodstock history and that of the trail. The bazaar was a marketplace in the woods during the festival, and the trail connected two major areas of festival grounds, according to the Bethel Woods website.

“I look forward to sharing the magic that has been instilled here,” said Hein. “It is alive in the landscape, and it will continue to live through the hearts and minds of those who come to experience it for themselves.” 

The event is limited to 40 participants. No dogs. Families are welcome. Visitors are asked to hike in appropriate footwear and pack rain gear in case of showers. 

This phase of the project was funded in part by a Sullivan Renaissance Healthy Community Initiatives grant.

Pottery workshops starting August 2 and 3

HONESDALE, PA — Six-week pottery classes for adults will be held, beginning on August 2 and 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bodhi Tree Art School and Studio. The class includes everything needed to form vessels on the wheel, carve, decorate, glaze and fire pieces. This class is geared toward beginner to moderately skilled students.

Students who were in the March 2020 workshop and would like to return are offered three free weeks with the choice of continuing the additional weeks.

D & H Canal Lock 31’s resurrection

SHOHOLA, PA — The Shohola Railroad and Historical Society invites all interested parties to a program about Lock 31’s part in the journey of anthracite coal from the mines near Scranton, along the gravity railroad into Honesdale and by barge down the Delaware & Hudson Canal through Hawley to the Delaware River and on to Kingston, NY on the Hudson River.

Antonio Perito, assistant manager of Milford’s Wayne Bank, will be the guest speaker for the evening, detailing the work done on the Lock 31 area. Perito’s talk starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 4 at the Shohola Township Building, 159 Twin Lakes Rd. Free refreshments follow the presentation with the business meeting thereafter.

‘August Spectacular’ at the Wurtsboro Art Alliance

WURTSBORO, NY — The Wurtsboro Art Alliance presents “August Spectacular!” starting on Thursday, July 29 at its gallery on Sullivan Street. 

Nearly 30 artists working in a variety of mediums will exhibit at the show, which runs through Tuesday, August 31. 

A reception will be held on Saturday, August 7 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. A “Yart Sale” will take place in the parking lot the same day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

The Wurtsboro Art Alliance is located in the John Neilson Gallery at 73 Sullivan St. and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. A community arts group, the Wurtsboro Art Alliance encourages and promotes art and artists from the area. New members are always welcome.

The canal, the battle, Woodstock and more

NARROWSBURG, NY — Ten Mile River Scout Museum co-director Glenn Pontier will give a talk on local history at the museum on Saturday, August 3 at 7 p.m. From the D&H Canal to the Battle of Minisink Ford to the Woodstock festival, there’s a great deal to learn.

Ten Mile River is following COVID-19 safety protocols, and the talk will be held on the museum grounds. 

The Ten Mile River Scout Museum exists to preserve and promote the spirit and heritage of New York City Scouting at the Ten Mile River Scout camps and selected venues, through the creation of historical archives, displays, exhibits of photos, memorabilia, documents and tangible items in both indoor and outdoor settings. It also covers local history.

Geocaching with WSPL

CALLICOON, NY — The Western Sullivan Public Library (WSPL) is offering a geocaching backpacks at its Delaware Free branch.

Participants use a navigational system to find hidden containers, called “caches,” stashed within walking distance of the library. 

This free challenge is for children ages 9 to 17. Backpacks are available for the day on a first come, first served basis through August 5.
