Cavage and Sudigala at the Cooperage

HONESDALE, PA — Guitar/banjo bluegrass duo Cavage and Sudigala will perform at the Cooperage’s outdoor Pocket Park on Saturday, August 28 starting at 6 p.m.

They combine traditional bluegrass with elements of jazz, swing and new grass.

Josh Sudigala, guitar and vocals, lives in Tunkhannock and has been described as on “the cutting edge of today’s bluegrass movement.” David Cavage, banjo and vocals, is from Carbondale. The Cooperage says that “Besides bluegrass music, he also plays jazz, and swing tunes on tenor guitar. Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine says ‘he sounds like Bela Fleck with attitude.’”

Tickets are limited, and there is a $10 suggested donation with advanced registration and a $15 suggested donation at the door.

When inside the Cooperage, masks are not required, but they ask that those who are unvaccinated wear a mask inside to protect others (e.g. children and immune compromised).

This concert is part of the “Cooped Up” summer concert series featuring local musicians.

‘In the Works~In the Woods’ at the Forestburgh Playhouse

FORESTBURGH, NY — “In the Works~In the Woods” is a new annual arts festival, taking place at the Forestburgh Playhouse on September 9–12 in Forestburgh.

Look for new musicals, new plays, a cabaret performance and much more.

The playhouse is offering three different passport memberships to the festival: Friends of Forestburgh: $150 (Individual), Miracle of the Forest VIP: $500 (2 Passes) and Festival Founder VIP: $1000 (2 Passes).

Julia Greenberg at the Rock Valley Schoolhouse

ROCK VALLEY, NY — Singer/songwriter Julia Greenberg will perform with Jeremy Chatzky, Will Holshouser and Tricia Scott for some late summer songs at the Rock Valley Schoolhouse in Rock Valley.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 29 and starts at 4 p.m.

A $10 donation per person is requested, and masking and social distancing will be required.

Tribute to first responders in Kauneonga Lake

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — The Town of Bethel, with the  Bethel Local Development Corporation, is holding a concert in honor of first responders on Thursday, September 2 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gazebo Park in Kauneonga Lake.

Aerial Acoustics will perform.

Nutshell holds ‘Last Picture Art Show’

LAKE HUNTINGTON — After more than 25 years, the Nutshell Arts Center is closing its doors.

The building has been purchased by the Delaware Valley Opera.

A final show, the “Last Picture Art Show,” will mark the end of the era. It begins with a reception on Saturday, August 28 from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. A potluck party will follow.

The show features the works of 26 artists in painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media. There is no charge for admission.

The exhibition runs from August 28 to September 12. Hours are Fridays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays/Sundays from 12 noon to 6 p.m.

Artists featured include Linda Bastian, Victor Candell, Ellen Cibula, Eva Drizhal, Dale Emmart, Charles Farless, Ann Finneran, Kathe Frantz, Joan Giordano, Jacinto Gomez, Peter Greene, Miriam Hernandez, Richard Kreznar, William Landau, Nancy Lew Lee, Glenn Lieberman, Marjorie Morrow, Pat Nugent, Michael Rocco Pinciotti (Rocky), Juan Rigal, Allan Rubin, Richard Seahausen, Johan Sellenraad, Candy Spilner, Barbara Winfield, and Barbara Zweig.

Local history talk about apothecary bottles

SHOHOLA, PA — Old bottles of medicine can be compelling and nostalgic.

Learn more about them and about Stripple’s, the local drug store, from Ed Nikles, Jr. He’ll lecture on the topic at the next Shohola Railroad and Historical Society meeting on Wednesday, September 1 at 7 p.m., at the Shohola Municipal Building on Twin Lakes Road.

There will be refreshments afterward.

Patti Greco Sunshine at Rafters

CALLICOON, NY — Singer Patti Greco Sunshine will appear at Rafter’s Tavern on Saturday, August 28 beginning at 7 p.m.

A performer whose career has spanned Vegas, Atlantic City and the Catskills, she has also been a headliner on major cruise lines.

In good weather, the performance will be outside in the Nest at Rafters; the concert will move indoors if it rains.

There is no cover charge, but donations are appreciated. The tavern kitchen is open for lunch and dinner.

Tour the studios of Wayne artists

WAYNE COUNTY — Ever want to see what an artist’s studio looks like?

On Friday through Sunday, August 27, 28 and 29, Wayne County artists are opening their studios for tours. Meet the county’s established and emerging artists—who work in all media—and learn about the arts scene in the county.

You can start at the Wayne County Arts Alliance headquarters in the Cooperage, 1030 Main Street in Honesdale. Then visit the artists. The 2021 roster is available at riverreporter.com/arts-leisure.

Meet the artists and discuss their philosophies, inspiration and working techniques while viewing their most recent collections of artwork.

Work is also available for purchase.

UDC announces honorees for 33rd annual River Valley Awards

BEACH LAKE, PA — The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) will honor groups and individuals who have enhanced the quality of life or protected the resources of the Upper Delaware River Valley at its 33rd annual awards ceremony on Sunday, September 12.

The public banquet will take place at Central House Family Resort, located at 81 Milanville Road in Beach Lake. A reception with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar begins at 3 p.m. The buffet dinner featuring is set for 4 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and must be reserved by September 3.

New York State Senator Mike Martucci (R-42) will serve as the keynote speaker.

The UDC will honor the following recipients:

Distinguished Service Award—Kevin Reish, U.S. Park Ranger, National Park Service (retired), for 34 years of service at the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River from 1987-2021.

Robin M. Daniels Memorial Lifesaving Award—Sparrowbush Engine Company, for 60 years of providing highly skilled volunteer emergency services in often challenging conditions on land and water, particularly at the NYS Route 97 Hawk’s Nest and on the Delaware River.

Partnership Award—The Trust for Public Land, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Sullivan County, and Town of Delaware, for collaborating to transform an abandoned property in Callicoon, NY into a 40-acre riverside park for public recreational use and municipal services.

Outstanding Community Achievement Award—The Town of Highland, NY, for supporting multiple beautification, recreational access, and historic projects that spotlight the river and for revising the Town Zoning Code to conform to the Upper Delaware Land and Water Use Guidelines.

Recreation Achievement Awards (2)—The Knotweed Management Project, for an invasive plant species research and educational outreach effort coordinated by the Friends of the Upper Delaware River, Inc.; and Keep Hawley–Honesdale Beautiful, for their accomplishments in roadside and riverside volunteer litter clean-up activities since 2017.

Volunteer Award—Edwin “Ed” Jackson of Narrowsburg, NY for his nearly two-decade tenure as Town of Tusten Planning Board chair, his leadership with the New York State Planning Federation, and dedication to military veterans’ causes.

Cultural Achievement Awards (2) – Michael Rocco “Rocky” Pinciotti of Cochecton, NY, for his contributions as an artist, teacher, and director of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance Gallery from 2005-2020; and The Delaware Company, Inc., for keeping history alive through commemorations, new markers, a river trail extension and Sullivan County site programming at Sullivan County’s Fort Delaware Museum of Colonial History and Minisink Battleground Park.

Community Service Award—Andy Boyar of Eldred, NY, for his work to protect the health and safety of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, for conceiving  the Upper Delaware Litter Sweep, his presidency of the Upper Delaware Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and fulfillment of local government leadership roles.

Special Recognition Awards (2)—WJFF Radio Catskill, for their programming focus on Upper Delaware River Valley issues, interests, and individuals; and Bonnie Sheard of Milanville, PA, for nearly four decades of work and volunteer activity at the National Park Service Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, including as manager of the Commercial & Special Park Uses Program.

Oaken Gavel Award—Larry H. Richardson, Town of Cochecton, NY representative from 1989 to present, for his leadership in chairing the Upper Delaware Council during 2020.

Technically speaking, in dance

COCHECTON, NY — Isabel Braverman, Corinna Grunn and guest dancers present “Technically Speaking: an evening of dance,” on Thursday, August 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Cochecton Pump House.

Described as “an observation on human behavior and the body’s hidden antics,” the performance looks at the relationship between technology and interpersonal connections.

There are six dance pieces, and the audience can join the performers “in a site-specific, movement-based examination of social technology and the nature of human connection,” a press release said.

“Technically Speaking” is sponsored by Act Underground and is made possible in part with funding from the Statewide Community Regrant Program. It is administered by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.

Racism, its history and healing, at Farm Arts

DAMASCUS, PA — Janus Adams will be at the Farm Arts Collective courtyard on Sunday, August 29 at 3 p.m. for a conversation about racism, history and healing.

Dr. Adams is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, historian, bestselling author, and host of public radio’s “The Janus Adams Show” and podcast.

A scholar of African American and women’s history, she specializes in putting current events into a historical perspective.

Following the presentation and question-and-answer period, soup will be shared while the conversation continues.

Books will be available for purchase and for signing. Attendees are welcome to bring along a dish or baked good to share as well.

Intermediate beekeeping class begins September 2

PENNSYLVANIA — Lackawanna College is holding its intermediate beekeeping certificate program from September 2 to November 4.

The program is designed to support beekeepers who have completed the beginner certificate, or who have kept bees for two or more seasons.

By the end of the course, the college says, beekeepers will be able to grow an apiary, improve colonies and maintain a sustainable apiary.

Students who complete the course will be eligible for the advanced beekeeping certificate.

This program runs every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost is $250 for the certificate, and the textbook is not included.

Swing band at the Crawford Library

MONTICELLO, NY — Bruce Zuckrow and his big band will perform swing era music on the E.B. Crawford Public Library’s outdoor stage in Monticello.

It takes place on Wednesday, September 1, and starts at 6 p.m. Rain date is September 8.

Keith Newman, who has played the Catskills rock circuit for years with various bands, will perform solo on Thursday, September 2, starting at 6 p.m.

The concert, dubbed “Acoustic Entertainment with Keith Newman,” will feature songs from his repertoire, which includes music by Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, Dylan, and more. Rain date is Tuesday, September 28.

Masking is strongly recommended at both events, and social distancing is required. Bring your own chair or blanket. Registration is limited to 50 people.

Harmonizing in the woods

HAWLEY, PA — Harmony in the Woods presents tribute band Forever Simon and Garfunkel in two shows on Friday, August 27, one from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the other from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The duo performs songs from the early folk-music years; through their later, famous years and finally to Simon’s solo career.

Online tickets are no longer available for the afternoon show, but tickets may be available at the door.

Harmony in the Woods’ show for August 28 has been postponed, but Afro-Caribbean funk and dance band El Caribefunk is scheduled for September 3.

Tickets for shows at Harmony in the Woods are $25 to $35, depending on seating.
