UDC awards cleanup grants to Deerpark, Lumberland

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Upper Delaware Council (UDC) voted on May 4 to award a combined $4,454.62 to the Towns of Deerpark and Lumberland through its River and Shoreline Clean-up Grants.

Since initiating the grant program in 2014, the UDC has awarded $41,363.00 through 2022.

The Town of Deerpark will focus efforts on the Hawk’s Nest area of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway on Route 97, a much-photographed, winding hillside route that offers sweeping views from 200 feet above the river.

The town highway department will conduct three sweeps, one each after Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day to pick up debris along a 2.9-mile section to the Lumberland town line.

The Town of Lumberland will hire a contractor to collect trash every other week during the summer along the town’s river banks from Camp Tel-Yehudah to the Mongaup River Access at the Deerpark border for $1,100.

Honesdale Rotary showers Victim’s Intervention with gifts

HONESDALE, PA — It was the first-ever housewarming shower for the Victim’s Intervention Program (VIP), and the Honesdale Rotary Club was the host.

On April 30, dozens of people showed up at Grace Episcopal Church to “shower” VIP with more than $1,000 worth of gifts—including some donated online—and $200-plus in cash.

Donations included pots, pans, blankets, toys, household items and more. Some were donated by Interact, the youth Rotary club at Honesdale High School.

Attendees were treated to food, a basket raffle and games.

VIP’s community outreach manager, Chelsea Falotico, thanked Rotary and talked about VIP’s services, including its 24-hour crisis hotline and safe shelters for victims of domestic abuse. “Some of our clients show up with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, so these gifts will really help,” she said.

Honesdale Rotary thanked local businesses that donated baskets.

Honesdale Rotary is a service club with more than 40 members. It is part of Rotary International. New members are welcome. Learn more about the club on Facebook.
