SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — The annual raffle at the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) has returned.

During the month of January 2023 there will be a drawing every evening, offering prizes ranging from $25 to $100.

A raffle ticket gives the holder 31 chances to win, and gives a free ticket to any SCDW show in 2023, or $10 off the 2023 musical, “Oliver”.

All the money collected goes toward needed repairs for the theatre, and to support the SCDW theater scholarship program for young actors who plan to attend college.

Each raffle ticket costs $10, and can be purchased at www.myrivertickets.com or by emailing scdwtreasurer@gmail.com.

A handmade quilt to keep you warm all winter

BETHANY, PA — Just in time for the holidays, a handmade quilt and two cash prizes will be awarded in a raffle drawing on Saturday, December 10 as part of a fundraiser to benefit Bethany Public Library.

The cash prizes will be $500 and $250.

Nancy Swingle, a quiltmaker and Bethany resident, has donated a quilt for the library’s holiday season drawing.

Tickets, which are on sale now, cost $10 each or three for $25. They can be purchased by calling Janet Heinly at 570/470-1562 or Jane Bollinger at 570/253-5711, or call the library at the number below from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday.

HYDE PARK, NY — The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and the Home of FDR National Historic Site will host a full day of free holiday events on Saturday, December 10.

There will be photos with Santa beginning from 1 p.m to 3 p.m., and the annual Children’s Reading Festival will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Henry A. Wallace Center. Children’s book authors will read from and sign copies of their books. Featured books will be available for purchase in the New Deal Store in the Wallace Center.

The authors for the Reading Festival include Lu Ann Schnable Kaldor and Eve S. Gendron, Karen Finnegan—with Jolene the Disability Awareness Chicken, and Barbara Ann Mojica.

Children will also be able to make holiday cards for sailors on the USS Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. The card-making begins at 12 noon.

The Roosevelt Library will be open to visitors free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the Home of FDR will have tours available from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site will be decorated for the holidays and open from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon in the Wallace Center lobby.

Karaoke at the SCDW

MOUNTAINDALE, NY — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop will host the 2022 Holiday Cabaret Karaoke event on Saturday, December 3.

The evening takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is led by emcee Clown Daddy. It stars local singers—and you—on the stage at Forage & Gather, which is located at 81 Main St.

The Forage & Gather kitchen will be open. There is a beer and wine menu.

A $10 donation is suggested.

Bows and boughs and more

DINGMANS FERRY, PA — The Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) presents a few events to keep the family busy at the beginning of December.

On Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, families can enjoy a bird bonanza. Watch feeders and put together a handmade bird feeder crafted from recycled materials. Items will be provided but you’re welcome to bring your own supplies.

On Saturday, December 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the Ecozone Discovery Room will be open. Explore a bald eagle’s nest, a bat cave and a beaver lodge. You can dig in a fossil pit.

Hands-on exhibits featuring natural history, sustainability and the local environment are also available.

The cost is $2 per person, with no registration required.

On Sunday, December 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., create your own holiday decorations using natural materials. Evergreen boughs are provided as craft materials, but participants are welcome to bring their own supplies and decorations. Music, drinks and snacks will be provided.

The center is located at 538 Emery Rd.

The Christmas story—and more—in art

SHOHOLA, PA — The Barryville Area Arts Association will hold an exhibit highlighting the story of Christmas at the Artists Market Community Center. An opening reception on Sunday, December 4, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the community center launches the exhibit.

Complimentary refreshments and a free set of 10 holiday greeting cards are available to all who attend.

“The Story of Christmas” includes images that track the story from when an angel first gives Mary the news to when the holy family are fugitives, hiding from Herod on their way home.

Much of the work in this display was created during the Renaissance and was sponsored by the Catholic Church.

Also on display is a sister exhibit, titled “Creation Stories from Around the World.” This one includes artistic depictions of Native American, ancient Egyptian, Hindu, Babylonian, Chinese, ancient Greek and Islamic creation stories.

The exhibit will be on display from now until the end of the year.

The Artists Market Community Center is located at 114 Richardson Ave.

The Rick Drew holiday parade returns

PORT JERVIS, NY — The Tri-State Chamber of Commerce announced the 50th annual Rick Drew Holiday Parade. It will take place on Saturday, December 3.

The parade will line up at 4 p.m. on Canal Street and start at 5 p.m.

Refreshments will be served after the parade in the Presbyterian Church.

Trophies will be awarded after the parade in multiple categories, along with a business lighting contest with three prizes.

Collecting hats, gloves, socks and more in a kindness drive

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — The Sullivan County’s wellness committee and the youth bureau will hold a kindness drive until Friday, December 16. Donate hats, gloves, scarves and socks to help kids, families and older adults stay warm this winter.

Drop-off locations include the lobby at the county government center, the Sheriff’s Office, the lobby at the county’s social services office, the Community Services lobby, or the lobby at the county’s public health department.

Hurleyville’s history, shared on a hike

HURLEYVILLE, NY — As part of the Holiday in Hurleyville event on Saturday, December 3, Sullivan County Historian John Conway will lead a Hurleyville history hike along the Milk Train trail at 1 p.m.

Hikers should meet in the Upper West Side parking lot.

Learn about the Lenape tribe and its culture, about early white settlers, the tanning industry, farming in the region, folklore, legends and more.

The hike is sponsored by the Delaware Company and Morgan Outdoors.

Children’s holiday party from the Liberty Elks

LIBERTY, NY — The Liberty Elks Lodge 1545 will hold its annual children’s holiday party on Saturday, December 3 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the lodge.

Children under age 10 will receive a free gift. Lunch will be provided, and photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available.

Tree lighting in Mamakating Park

WURTSBORO, NY — The Town of Mamakating’s annual tree lighting will take place on Thursday, December 1 at 6 p.m. in the Town of Mamakating Park. The park is located at 27-29 Mamakating Road.

The free event includes a DJ who will play holiday songs, refreshments like hot cocoa and cookies. Goodie bags will be distributed to kids, who can also meet Santa and Mrs. Claus.

A holiday celebration for kids

WOODBOURNE, NY — On Saturday, December 3, kids can enjoy Christmas a little early.

A “Christmas Night” celebration takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Woodbourne Fire House, which is located at 355 Firehouse Rd.

The night includes a hayride and caroling, hot chocolate and snacks, followed by a Christmas movie.
