MILFORD, PA — Since the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, masking policies in schools has been in flux. Below is a simple timeline of the developments for the Delaware Valley School District since August.
Mask optional state-wide policy
First day of school
PA DOH Order stipulates masks at schools, while indoors
Order takes effect.
DV school district passes resolution to allow mask exemptions without medical certification resulting in a flood of mask exemption requests
Lawsuit is filed by five district parents to challenge expanded masking exemption
Temporary restraining order granted, eliminating exemptions requests
School board election returns incumbents
Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court has struck down the state’s school mask mandate, ruling that acting Health Secretary Alison Beam didn’t have the authority to issue the requirement under the state’s Disease Control and Prevention Law. The decision is immediately appealed.
Governor Wolf indicates the state will return masking authority to school boards on Jan 17, 2022
Federal judge declines to extend injunction in DVSD case, allowing for the school board to allow mask exemptions without medical certification to continue while the court case plays out, effectively giving the win to the school board.
