Ringing in the change of seasons

Well, there’s no denying it. Autumn is here and fast moving into its Ice Queen successor, winter.

If you’re like me, the change of seasons is a delight. Kind of like a visit with family. The first few days are great, but then you dread waking up to face the ongoing bleakness.

Let’s not be quite that fatalistic. The pleasant crunch of autumn leaves provides a nice percussive sound while enjoying a brisk walk. Cider is for sale at the farmers’ markets. Jackets and sweaters hide the aftermath of Halloween candy you bought to give the neighborhood kids. How were you to know you wouldn’t use all 1,000 pieces?

Thankfully, during our march to the inevitable winter there are some indoor activities to put on the calendar, starting with perhaps the most critical one. Please remember to vote on Tuesday, November 7. Voting information for your specific municipality can be found online by visiting www.elections.ny.gov.

Participation is more critical than ever. As my mother often said, “You didn’t vote? Then you don’t get to complain!”

Opening on Saturday, November 18 is one of the DVAA’s most popular exhibitions—the 18th annual Art in Sixes. A celebration of small works, it shows local artists’ work within the limit of six inches by six inches. Now you didn’t hear it from me, but I think a few artists go a little larger. The only way you’ll know for sure is by attending.

On Sunday, November 19, Sixes is being celebrated by our local group of authors, the Yarnslingers. Come hear them explore the theme, Small Wonders, at 2 p.m. Readers will include Alexander Gardner, Cass Collins, Dawn McIntyre, Nancy Dymond, Bill Fellenberg and founding member Ramona Jan.

Both events take place at Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, 37 Main St., Narrowsburg, NY.

Area seniors, remember Sage Sessions, which are presented by Tusten Social in partnership with Growing Older Together every first and third Tuesday. Local students, sign up for the Tusten Youth Club, presented every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., a partnership between Tusten Youth Commission and Tusten Social at the Tusten Community Hall. It’s easy. Just email info@tustenyouth.org.

Indulge yourself during the autumn rush. There is so much to be done this time of year. Putting up deer fencing. Draining outdoor water lines. Raking. Pruning. Netflix and a beer while enjoying a crackling fire.

Pamper yourself. If you’re anything like me, it’s exhausting to remember everything you must tell your spouse to do.
