HAVERTOWN, PA — The Havertown Post Office will be offering hot dogs to its letter carriers in honor of National Dog Bite Awareness Week.
The postal workers also hope to raise awareness among mail recipients—especially the ones who own dogs.
National Dog Bite Awareness Week runs through Saturday, June 10.
Havertown Post Office Manager Danielle Candelora launched “Take a Bite Out of the Dog” as the theme, all part of an awareness campaign to help reduce dog attacks.
The U.S. Postal Service experienced over 5,300 dog attacks nationwide in 2022.
Pennsylvania letter carriers had the fourth-most dog bites in the nation last year—313 attacks.
Philadelphia alone had 28 attacks in 2022.
The Havertown Post Office had four incidents. It is located in Haverford Township, near Philadelphia.
“Every year, thousands of postal employees are attacked by dogs as they deliver America’s mail. And while it’s a dog’s natural instinct to protect their family and home, we ask all customers to act responsibly by taking safety precautions with their dogs while the mail is being delivered,” said Candelora.
