Plans announced for Lenape conference

To be held in July in the Lehigh Valley

BETHLEHEM, PA — Registration is now open for “Homecoming: The Lenape Speak,” a day-long conference scheduled for Saturday, July 27 from 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. It is hosted by Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, and will be held at Northampton Community College.

This event will feature Lenape speakers from across the United States and Canada, who will sit together to discuss topics such as Lenape history, language, craft, horticulture, food sovereignty and justice, medicine, and storytelling. In addition to attending these panel sessions, attendees will have time to visit exhibition tables where they can learn from speakers one-on-one. Light breakfast, lunch, and Lenape-inspired dinner will be served.

The conference is open to the public; a reduced fee for students is available, and educators at all levels are encouraged to attend.

The Lenape are the Indigenous people of eastern Pennsylvania, southern New York, New Jersey and Northern Delaware. Says Chief Adam Waterbear DePaul, tribal storykeeper and director of education for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania:

"This is an incredible and historic occasion. While many of our people remain in our homelands, many were forcibly removed through colonial aggression. This conference will bring together our Lenape people from their distant communities to sit and speak together. Anyone attending is in for an unprecedented learning opportunity; even our speakers will learn much valuable information and culture regarding other Lenape communities that have little opportunity to visit each other."
