‘The City Without Jews’ to be shown

HYDE PARK, NY — The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and the Jewish Federation of Dutchess County will host a screening of the 1924 silent film, “The City Without Jews” on Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m.

The show will include live original music composed and performed by klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and silent film pianist Donald Sosin.

Set in the Austrian city of Utopia (a thinly-disguised stand-in for Vienna), the story follows the political and personal consequences of an anti-Semitic law passed by the National Assembly, forcing all Jews to leave the country.

At first, the decision is met with celebration, but when the citizens of Utopia eventually come to terms with the loss of the Jewish population—and the resulting economic and cultural decline—the National Assembly must decide whether or not to invite the Jews back.

The movie is based to some extent on the book of the same title by Hugo Bettauer, published in 1922.

The event will be held in the Henry A. Wallace Center at the Roosevelt Library to commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day).

There is no charge to attend, but registration is required at www.jewishdutchess.org/events.

For more information, call Cliff Laube at 845/486-7745.
