HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania is getting $396 million in federal funds to lower its greenhouse gas emissions.

The federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program awarded the money to the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which will now create the Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) program. The program is expected to reduce 5.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the industrial sector— the highest-emitting sector in the state—by 2030 in support of Pennsylvania’s Priority Climate Action Plan.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that CPRG will reduce greenhouse gas pollution by as much as 971 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2050, roughly equal to the emissions of five million homes over more than 25 years.

The EPA selected 25 applications from state, local, and regional entities on the frontlines of fighting climate pollution.
