LVSC receives grant from Wolf Lake Neighbors

MONTICELLO, NY — Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County (LVSC) has received a grant of $2,500 from the Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation.

This grant will enable LVSC to keep the Wednesday night English as a Second Language (ESL) class this year.

“Sullivan County has a culturally diverse population, with 28 percent of our residents speaking languages other than English at home, and about one-in-five members of the Sullivan County community lack basic literacy skills,” said Angela Dutcher, executive director of LVSC.

Currently, LVSC offers five classes for ESL learners at the facility on North Street in Monticello. These classes are open to all new English language learners, and run once a week for two-hour sessions.

“With the recent influx of immigrants into our community, the need for ESL classes is greater than ever,” said Dutcher, “and the Wolf Lake Neighbors grant will allow us to meet this need.”

Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, supported by homeowners at nearby Wolf Lake. It is engaged in charitable activities in the towns of Mamakating and Thompson.

“We support literacy initiatives, particularly adult literacy programs”, said Jean Eifert, a director of the foundation.
