LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — For the Lady Bulldogs bucketeers, it looked like it was going to be a walk in the park. But then, despite Riley Ernst’s lucky patriotic socks, things took a turn for the worse, as the Lady Raiders of O’Neill rallied to defeat Sullivan West 49-42.
In the first frame of the girls’ varsity game of hoops on January 4, the contest got off to a slow start as the home team managed to outscore the opposition 7-0, but the tide turned in the final three innings, and the Lady Raiders outgunned Sullivan West 15-11, 17-15 and 17-9.
At the start of the contest, the action resembled a limbo-fest; it seemed that at the onset of scoring, it was “let’s see how low we can go.” Then the pace picked up a bit, in a rough-and-tumble game that drew a total of 34 penalty calls by the ever-vigilant refs: SW 13/22 (59 percent) and O’Neill 9/12 (75 percent).
In the third period, the score was repeatedly tied, until at the close, when the Lady Bulldogs held a slim 1-point lead at 33-32.
But in the fourth period, things went south for the home team as they were outscored by 8 points.
Sullivan West’s leading hoopsters were Riley Ernst (14 points), Taylor Wall (12), Grace Boyd (8 points including a 3-pointer) and Brielle Arnott (a 3-pointer).
O’Neill: Aniyah Lewis (a game-leading 26 points including a pair of 3-pointers) and Audrey Elisondo (9 points including two 3-pointers).
OK, a few words about Ernst’s patriotic footwear: red and white sneaks with matching red-and-white striped socks featuring a field of white stars on a blue background.
Sullivan West (4-2) is coached by Pat Donovan, while O’Neill (7-1) is helmed by Robert McIvor.
