MILFORD, PA — Delaware Valley Action offers the Milford community a multitude of resources, from free supplies for mothers and children, to a place for people to gather to socialize. It advocates for civic and environmental issues, and hosts events like the recent presentation about the spectacular and inspiring Cornelia Bryce Pinchot, a crusading feminist and matriarch of the Pinchot family.
Mary Beth Kennedy Voda introduced Cornelia Pinchot by sharing the evolution of her own fascination with her. What she learned about Pinchot was first published in Pennsylvania Heritage magazine as “The Lady in Red: Cornelia Bryce Pinchot, feminist for social justice.”
Then Peter and Nancy Pinchot spoke vividly about their recollections of “Lia’’ and her influence on the Pinchot family. That legacy endures to this day in her descendants’ commitment to social justice and the environment.
“Milford in Pike County, PA, is often called the birthplace of conservation, but it also has a rich and inspiring legacy of progressive activism by numerous members of the Pinchot family,” said Ed Gragert of Delaware Valley Action!. He cited Cornelia’s work in feminism, that Amos Pinchot was the co-founder of the ACLU and Nancy and Peter Pinchot’s work in environmental justice.
Grey Towers, the Pinchot family home, was donated to the U.S. Forest Service and is open to the public.
