Sullivan County budget wins award

MONTICELLO, NY — For the eighth time in a row, the Sullivan County Budget Office has earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association. Wayne County developing comprehensive plan

HONESDALE, PA — Work continues on the update of the Wayne County Comprehensive Plan and members of the public are still invited to share their thoughts and ideas about the future of Wayne County.

Recently, the Wayne County Planning/GIS Department and the Wayne County Planning Commission hosted the last of three public meetings on the data gathered in support of the plan. For those who could not attend, a video of the presentation on May 30 at the Park Street Complex in Honesdale is available on the Wayne County YouTube channel, and you can submit comments to CompPlan@waynecountypa.gov throughout the process.

As a result of the planning process, Wayne County has upgraded its parcel and address map—a geographic information systems (GIS) product available on the Wayne County website—and has created a new cultural and recreation opportunities map, compiling GIS data for all of the parks and other outdoor recreational facilities and cultural assets in the county’s 28 municipalities.

Rep. Cartwright reintroduces Senior Legal Hotline Act

WASHINGTON, DC — Lawmakers from Pennsylvania recently introduced legislation to boost legal services for at-risk seniors. On June 15, Northeast PA’s Rep. Matt Cartwright introduced the Senior Legal Hotline Act, which would create a five-year, $10-million grant program to support organizations that operate senior legal hotlines. Sen. Bob Casey introduced an identical bill in the U.S. Senate.

Senior legal hotlines provide older adults with access to free legal information, advice and referrals on issues like health care, finances, housing and landlord disputes, income maintenance and disability. Due to a lack of resources, however, many hotlines are no longer operational or have scaled back their hours.

“Our seniors are highly vulnerable. Many can’t afford legal assistance or don’t know where to look for help, especially folks with low incomes,” said Cartwright. “This bipartisan legislation will protect older Americans in Northeastern Pennsylvania and nationwide from getting scammed out of their hard-earned savings while expanding their access to vital legal services.”
