Beware of flash flooding this evening

RIVER VALLEY — The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) is warning that heavy rains are causing life-threatening flash floods in the area and urging motorists to turn around when encountering flooded roads.

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, NWS says.

At 4:08 p.m. today, the NWS said between three and four inches have fallen in Wayne County, PA. While heavy rain has moved out of the area, flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, NWS said, as creeks and streams continue to rise. Some locations in Pennsylvania expected to experience flash flooding include Honesdale, Walton, Deposit, Sidney, Sanford, Susquehanna, Forest City, Susquehanna Depot, Sterling, Harford, Waymart, Hawley, Unadilla, Hancock, Windsor, New Milford, Lanesboro, Franklin, Thompson and Union Dale.

Local law enforcement in northwestern Sullivan County, NY, is reporting flash flooding on numerous roads, NWS reported at 4:36 p.m. Between 2.5 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen on the area, NWS says.

Some locations expected to experience flash flooding include Delhi, Callicoon, Davenport, Roxbury, Colchester, Meredith, Cochecton, Andes, Stamford, Margaretville, Hobart, Jeffersonville, Fleischmanns, Bovina Center, Downsville, Corbett, Arkville, Meridale, Roscoe and Hazel.

The NWS warns that hilly terrain contains hundreds of low-water crossings that are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads and find an alternate route. Also report any flooding you see to local emergency services or law enforcement.
