Aktion Club helps with Sweet Dreams Project

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — The Aktion Club of Sullivan County recently held a successful Hoop-a-thon at New Hope Community.

The Aktion Club is a community service leadership group sponsored by the Monticello and Woodridge Kiwanis Clubs. It gives adults living with disabilities a chance to develop initiative and leadership skills and to serve their community.

Currently, it is composed of over 30 members from New Hope Community, Arc Greater Hudson Valley and The Center for Discovery.

The club raised $1,120 for the Sweet Dreams Project, which has been established by the Monticello Kiwanis Club to help children in Sullivan County who are being removed from their homes and placed in foster care. The main goal of this project is to provide the children with personal items to take with them, such as their very own new blanket, pillow, toothbrush, pajamas, hygiene items, stuffed animals, etc. in a travel bag in the hopes that this will help them go through such a difficult time with less stress and anxiety and higher self-esteem.

Pledges were gathered from Aktion Club members, their friends, family and neighbors. The Monticello and Woodridge Kiwanis Clubs, Monticello and Fallsburg Senior Citizens Clubs and individual club members as well as other community organizations were also happy to support this event. There was lots of cheering and laughter as the members lined up to successfully shoot the basketballs into the hoop for a good cause and all the participants in the event had an enjoyable time.

Contributed by the Kiwanis Clubs of Monticello and Woodridge.
