Community tapestry creates beauty from trash

NARROWSBURG, NY — Beginning Thursday, September 1, a community art project will begin to take shape between the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) and the post office.

The work, a community tapestry, consists of recyclables and found objects.

The work, titled “A Piece of Garbage,” is sponsored by the DVAA and Pocono Secrets.

Individual artists are asked to create small sculptures. Then those little sculptures are added to the big one, creating, a spokesperson said, a community vision.

“Pieces once considered garbage are reconstructed,” a spokesperson wrote, “and when joined together evolve into something new and beautiful.”

It creates a statement on art and the environment.

Pieces cannot weigh more than 35 pounds, need to be durable to withstand the elements and being moved. Artists should ensure there are no sharp edges.

Other pieces should not be moved without the creator’s consent.

The artwork will be on display from September 1 through Friday, September 30. Then it will be moved to the Tusten Theatre on Sunday, October 2, and will serve as a backdrop for the world premiere of “Zoe Comes Home,” a play by Melissa Bell and produced by the DVAA. The show takes place on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8.

All participating artists will receive a complimentary ticket to a performance of “Zoe Comes Home” at the Tusten Theatre. The play is directed by Laurie A. Guzda, and features Jess Beveridge, Susan Mendoza, Thomas Cambridge and R. Scott Porter.

The DVAA is located on Main Street.

For more information, or to purchase tickets to “Zoe Comes Home,” call 845/252-7576 or visit delawareartsalliance.org.
