MONTICELLO, NY — The next meeting of the Writing Memorial Moments workshop for veterans will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 6 at the Veterans Administration Office at the government center.
If you’re a veteran and a writer of poetry, prose or memoir—or if you just want to pick up the pen to jot down your thoughts and experiences, whether in the military or as a civilian—you can join Sullivan County Poet Laureate Sharon Kennedy-Nolle and fellow veterans for a workshop.
Those who are just interested in learning more about the craft are also welcome.
Participants can submit a poem or a short piece of prose (no more than five double-spaced pages in length) for discussion beforehand to Dr. Kennedy-Nolle.
The writing sample needn’t be about combat experience.
Participants will receive feedback about their work and come away with ideas for revision and/or expansion into other creative projects.
If you have questions or want to register, email sullivanpoetlaureate22.23@gmail.com.
If interested in having your work analyzed, send your writing to Kennedy-Nolle in an attachment to the same email address.
A graduate of Vassar College, Sharon Kennedy-Nolle received an MFA from the Writers’ Workshop as well as a doctoral degree in 19th-century American literature from the University of Iowa. She also holds master’s degrees from writing seminars at Johns Hopkins University and New York University.
Her chapbook, “Black Wick: Selected Elegies” was chosen as the 2020 chapbook editor’s pick by Variant Literature Press, who published it in 2021. Kennedy-Nolle was the winner of the New Ohio Review’s 2021 creative writing contest.
This program is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a program of the NYS Council on the Arts, with the support of the governor’s office and the New York State Legislature. It is administered by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and SUPLA (Sullivan Public Library Alliance).
