HAWLEY, PA — The Wallenpaupack Area High School (WAHS) Players will perform the musical “Les Misérables” at Wallenpaupack Area High School on Thursday and Friday, April 11 and 12, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m.; and Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.
Based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo and set in post-revolutionary France during a period of widespread poverty and ongoing political and social unrest, “Les Misérables” explores what it means to hunger not only for bread, but also for liberty, justice, salvation and love.
The story follows the characters and their struggles over several decades and explores the danger of indifference to human suffering, revealing the power of compassion.
The WAHS Players first performed “Les Misérables” 20 years ago when director Alison Hoffmann made her directorial debut at Wallenpaupack. “Staging this show as a young director in 2004, I’m not sure I realized how powerful the experience would be for students or audiences,” Hoffman said. “When we got a standing ovation one night after Act I—which rarely happens—I knew something had connected. The show’s themes, including a yearning to have your voice heard and counted, are universal and just as powerful today as they were 20 years ago.”
Members of the original production and all alumni of the WAHS Players are welcome to attend the 6 p.m. performance on Saturday, April 13 and participate in a meet-and-greet immediately after the show. On the 13th, complimentary tickets will be available to Players alumni; visit www.wallenpaupack.org/wahsplayers or email business manager Sara Rosencrance at rosencsa@wallenpaupack.org for more info.
Additionally, Players alumni aged 21 and up are invited to an afterparty at The Foundry, located at 318 Main St., following the meet-and-greet. Tickets to this event will be sold separately; $20 will cover entry, appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks. There will be a cash bar.
The school is located at 6552 Rte. 6.
