MILFORD, PA — Pike County jury has convicted three men charged in the November 2019 attack on the Pine Ridge Community. The jury convicted Adam Abdur-Rahim, age 34 of Binghamton, NY, Musa Abdur-Rahim, age 31 of Binghamton NY, and Troy Sutton, age 53 of Brooklyn, NY, of kidnapping, multiple counts of robbery, a charge of burglary, multiple counts of terroristic threats, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.  Additionally, Adam Abdur-Rahim and Troy Sutton were convicted of carrying a firearm without a license and possession of an instrument of crime.

During the trial, which took place over two weeks, the jury saw a video of the attack where the men forcibly broke into the office of the Pine Ridge Community and assaulted then Pine Ridge Security guard John Derbyshire handcuffed him, and brought him to his personal Dodge Ram truck.  Then chief of security Anthony Bonito confronted the men, where one pointed a firearm at him.  Adam Abdur-Rahim took a bullet-resistance vest from Derbyshire along with a rifle.  Musa-Abdur Rahim removed the duty belt and holster from Derbyshire.  Adam Abdur-Rahim and Musa Abdur Rahim then forced Derbyshire into his truck.

Troy Sutton assisted in the kidnapping by entering the security office and helping subdue Derbyshire. Sutton removed a bullet-resistant vest and keys to a marked Pine Ridge Security vehicle.

Once in the parking lot, the Rahim brothers drove away in Derbyshire’s vehicle with him handcuffed in the rear seat area of the truck. Sutton drove away in the Pine Ridge Security vehicle.  Sutton was located driving the security vehicle in the community by troopers and arrested.  In the security vehicle troopers located a semi-automatic pistol that Sutton had displayed at the Pine Ridge office.

The Rahim brothers were apprehended by troopers after fast thinking by Pine Ridge employees brought a maintenance vehicle and trailer to block the roadway near the entrance to the community.  Derbyshire was freed from his vehicle and handcuff restraints by troopers. In the truck, troopers located two handguns.  In another nearby vehicle troopers located some personal items of Derbyshire in a Nissan occupied by Sekou Rashid-Abdullah and Sushane Adams-Heylinger along with a BB gun. Troopers also found the stolen rifle and Pine Ridge Security jacket in another vehicle involved in the attack. Adams-Heylinger and Rashid-Adbullah had previously entered guilty pleas to conspiracy to commit kidnapping, along with charges of robbery and burglary.

While some troopers were rescuing Derbyshire, other troopers responded to the Pine Ridge office and located three other employees who were locked in an interior office. Fortunately, none of those employees suffered any physical injury in the attack.

At trial, the three claimed they were acting upon the request of Tonia Scott to eject trespassers from the building acting as tribal police of what proved to be a fraudulent Indian Nation created by Tonia Scott.

District Attorney Ray Tonkin and Assistant District Attorney Alec Colquhoun represented the Commonwealth during the trial with President Judge Gregory H. Chelak presiding.

Tonkin stated: “This crime shocked the Pine Ridge and surrounding communities with the brazen attack in broad daylight to kidnap an armed uniformed security guard.”  Tonkin praised the quick action by Pine Ride maintenance employees and responding troopers for preventing any further injury to Derbyshire or others stating that “Without the quick action to stop these individuals the evidence showed they were headed to Saw Creek to attempt the same type of attack.”

Sentencing has been set for the three on March 31, 2023, at 9 a.m. at the Pike County Courthouse before President Judge Chelak where the trio will face state prison sentences.
