MONTICELLO, NY  -- A man charged with assault in Glen Spey had fled the police, who found him lying down in a stream.

Dylan Campbell, 24, had assaulted and strangled a family member before fleeing the scene, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office. Deputies called for the sheriff’s K9 (canine) unit to assist.

Deputy Kyle Farrand and K9 Country tracked the suspect through the yards of several nearby residences, eventually locating him in the stream approximately a quarter of a mile away.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, according to the sheriff's office.

Campbell was charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault. He was arraigned before Town of Lumberland Judge Craig Cherry and sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. He is due back in court at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16.

“This was our first deployment of our new K9 team," said Sheriff Mike Schiff, who noted that the pair just graduated on June 28 from the Orange County Sheriff’s K9 Academy. “We  are proud of the job they did on their first time being called out. The suspect thought he could fool the K9 by lying down in a stream. It obviously didn’t work."
