We start with some simple foundations.
Our climate is changing.
With these changes, the weather is less predictable, and the environment is becoming less able to tolerate our overuse and overconsumption. Each year, we need 1.75 earths to support our current rate of consumption.
This is not sustainable.
We need to reinvent how we build, how we use resources, and how we mitigate the effects of the climate changes. That is the why of this month’s Sustainability section. Additionally, we need to know more about the steps that are being taken.
In these pages, we explore the New York State Climate Act Draft Scoping Plan, which offers innovative and holistic action to mitigate climate change as well as improve the quality and equity of our communities. We introduce the Earth to Sky local initiative, which ties the science-based findings of NASA to the particular landscape of the Upper Delaware River Valley. Through a concerted effort to communicate about climate change and its effect on our region, knowledge and participation increases.
It’s another piece of the reason for our coverage.
And finally, as Iris Gillingham says in her “Thoughts from a COP26 attendee,” being around people who are engaged and actively seeking equitable solutions gives us hope and reminds us of the best of being human.
