Shandelee Music Festival presents Colorado Cello Quartet

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Sometimes, after a concert, cellist Matthew Zalkind hears that the cello is an audience member’s favorite instrument. Now imagine hearing the rich sound of four cellos onstage.

On Saturday, August 19, you won’t have to imagine. You’ll be able to see and hear that in person as the Shandelee Music Festival (SMF) continues the celebration of its 30th anniversary season with “An Evening of Chamber Music,” performed by the exceptional Colorado Cello Quartet (CCQ).

Soloists, chamber musicians and educators David Requiro, Meta Weiss, Alice Yoo and Matthew Zalkind make up the newly formed Colorado Cello Quartet, which is based in Denver and Boulder.

The CCQ is passionate about championing new works and expanding the cello quartet literature, while also performing music that spans hundreds of years.

Multi-award-winning David Requiro won the first prize in the 2008 Naumburg International Violoncello Competition, first prize in both the Washington International and Irving M. Klein International String Competitions, and a top prize at the Gaspar Cassadó International Violoncello Competition in Hachioji, Japan.

He currently performs with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and serves as assistant professor of cello at the University of Colorado Boulder.

After making her international debut at the age of seven in Holland, Meta Weiss has established herself as one of the leading cellists of her generation. She’s performed around the world at venues like Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House and the Melbourne Recital Centre. As a top prize-winner in numerous competitions, she has been hailed as “magnetic” (ArtsJournal) and “luminous” (Sydney Arts Guide). She is chamber music coordinator and senior instructor for the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder and artistic director of the Boulder Cello Festival.

Alice Yoo is a celebrated soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. She has been warmly hailed for her sensitive musicianship, expressive nuance and passionate commitment to teaching. She serves on the faculty at the University of Denver and is the co-artistic director of the Denver Chamber Music Festival with her partner Matthew Zalkind.

Praised for his “impressive refinement, eloquent phrasing and singing tone” by The New York Times, Matthew Zalkind is a former member of the Harlem String Quartet, with which he toured Japan, England, Ethiopia and every region of the United States. He’s taken top prizes in many international solo competitions including the Washington International Competition, Isang Yun International Competition and the Beijing International Competition. He serves as assistant professor of cello at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.

The August 19 concert will feature music by Mozart, Massenet, Debussy, Haydn and others.

Tickets for “An Evening of Chamber Music” cost $35 for adults, $30 for SMF members and $10 for students aged 17 and under.

All performances in the Sunset Concert Series begin at 8 p.m., and will be performed at SMF’s fully accessible, climate-controlled Sunset Concert Pavilion, located at 442 J. Young Rd.

Advanced reservations are requested. Call 845/439-3277, or purchase your tickets and learn more about membership and sponsorships at www.shandelee.org.
