HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne Conservation District will accept orders for its annual seedling sale through Monday, April 1. 

The sale features seedlings and transplants from a variety of native trees, shrubs and ornamentals—many of which are favored by wildlife.

This year’s offerings include locally grown black-eyed Susans. These potted plants attract wild birds and are a favorite of wild turkeys. The exceptionally bright golden flowers are great for use along fences, driveways, walks and property boundaries. The three-inch pots of these and the purple coneflowers cost $4 each.

You can purchase bunches of three transplants of sugar maple, white oak, Norway spruce, Northern spicebush and Eastern redbud for $7 or $8 each. The Bluecrop and Blueray blueberries, as well as the Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apple trees, come in sets of two seedlings and sell for $22 and $35 respectively.

As part of the sale, the Wayne Conservation District sells five-foot-tall tree shelters that help protect the young seedlings from deer and rabbit damage. The shelters include an oak stake produced in Pennsylvania.

Mats measuring three square feet are offered to protect the plants from weed competition and moisture loss.

Finally, bluebird nesting boxes, made right here in Wayne County, are available at $18 each.

Orders must be received by April 1 and must be picked up Friday, April 26, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. or Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
