New Yorkers warned of ‘juice jacking’ scams

ALBANY, NY — The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning New Yorkers of a potential scam called “juice jacking,” where thieves place hidden skimming units inside USB ports of public cellphone charging kiosks at airports, hotels and other public spaces to steal data. The division has tips to prevent “juice jacking,” including: carry a portable battery charger and your own charging cables; use the wall plug-in socket to charge your devices; if you plug your device into a USB port and a prompt appears asking you to “share data” or “trust this computer” or “charge only,” always select “charge only”; consider a USB device called a data blocker that connects to your phone’s charging cable and keeps data from being transmitted through the USB cord; and power off your device before plugging it into the charging port.

PA Senate Judiciary Committee advances bills

HARRISBURG, PA — The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Sen. Lisa Baker (R-20), held a voting meeting on June 6 to advance three bills. Senate Bill 506, sponsored by Baker and Sen. The committee also advanced Senate Bill 527, which addresses the growing rise in “porch pirating.” The bill creates a new crime—theft of mail—and implements specific penalties for repeat offenders.

The final bill to be voted was Senate Bill 159, which would protect individuals from the unauthorized use of an electronic tracking device.

The AIR Act increases funding for the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Aircraft Pilots and Aviation Maintenance Technical Workers Programs by $30 million. These programs provide federal funds to colleges, high schools and aviation schools for training to become a pilot, aerospace engineer, unmanned aircraft systems operator or aviation maintenance worker.
