YULAN, NY — Former Prussian army officer Baron Freidrich Wilhelm von Steuben arrived at Valley Forge in March 1778 to assist the Continental Army. He was there to restore morale, introduce discipline and whip tattered soldiers into shape. His namesake festival, hosted for the last 30 years by the Yulan Fire Department, follows his lead by bolstering morale and polka, beer, and all things German. The annual celebration held at firemen’s field featured BB and the Polkahaus, German dancers, activities for children, and lots of community camaraderie.
