MILFORD, PA — The Pike County Commissioners received the 2024 Dr. George Moerkirk Memorial Contribution to EMS Award for their dedication to improving emergency medical services (EMS) in Pike County.
The commissioners were recognized for their EMS Matching Grant Program: Each municipality is encouraged to apply for up to a $2 million match from the general taxpayer fund, which equates to about $35 per household. This has resulted in over $4 million being made available to support county EMS agencies. The money is used for staffing, training, and equipment, leading to reduced response times and improved delivery.
Representatives from the PA Department of Health and the PA Emergency Health Services Council presented the award at a recent commissioners’ meeting.
The award is in memory of George Moerkirk, the past-president of PA Emergency Health Services Council, who was instrumental in developing Pennsylvania’s EMS system. The award recognizes individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the system.
Commissioner Matthew Osterberg emphasized the importance of community involvement in ensuring dependable ambulance services.
Commissioner Ronald Schmalzle gave credit to Tim Knapp, Pike’s emergency management director “Pike was in a severe crisis,” Schmalzle said. “Through this program and with Tim Knapp’s leadership, we’ve made a difference. We believe that lives have been saved.”
