Patriot Day ceremony in Honesdale

HONESDALE, PA — Wayne County will once again host a solemn observance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our country. The county will hold the ceremony Monday, September 11, at 8:30 a.m. It will take place at the 9-11 memorial in front of the Dimmick Building at 901 Court St., Honesdale.

The short ceremony marking the 22nd anniversary of the attacks will include the Pledge of Allegiance, brief remarks by Wayne County Director of Military & Veterans Affairs Victoria Wargo and Wayne County Commissioners, a moment of silence, the ringing of the bell, a local color guard, patriotic songs sung by a Western Wayne student and the playing of “Taps.”

The U.S. Congress designated September 11 as Patriot Day just three months after the attacks. Patriot Day honors the memory of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Each year Americans dedicate this day to remembering those who died and the first responders who risked their own lives to save others with a moment of silence and by flying the American flag at half-staff on that day.

First responders, veterans and all members of the public are welcome to attend.

If you can’t make it, county officials suggest you take a moment Monday at 8:46 a.m. (the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower) to observe a minute of self-reflection and remember the thousands who lost their lives that day and in subsequent years.
