Joyce Emily Shaffer, 88, of Swoope, VA, passed away on January 25, 2023. She was an amazing mom, wife, sister, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed. She was born in Atco, PA to Herman and Reba (Eldred) Mohn on March 11, 1934. She married the love of her life, Lloyd Marshall Shaffer, on March 12, 1955, and together they had three children and lived in Narrowsburg, NY. In 2006 she moved to Dingmans Ferry, PA and resided there for 11 years before moving to Swoope in 2017.

She was a member of the Tusten Ambulance Corp and also managed Kelly’s Home for Adults, a home for the elderly, in Narrowsburg. She then continued her career at The Center for Discovery, in Harris, NY for 35-plus years, taking care of children with developmental and physical disabilities. She retired from The Center for Discovery as a Records Coordinator at the age of 81.

In her off-hours, Joyce was an avid reader, gardener, baker and movie watcher, and enjoyed taking rides to various places where she grew up or areas she had not yet explored. Her love of dancing continued into her adult years. She was often seen kicking up her heels at various weddings and events, usually doing some version of the Charleston.

Joyce loved Jesus, and it showed in how she loved those around her. She always helped out those less fortunate than her, no matter the cost. She had a wonderful sense of humor, despite the many challenges and heartaches she endured over the years. Loving her family fiercely and sacrificing for them on a daily basis was at the core of who she was. Joyce was an inspiration to others and those she came in contact with.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd M. shaffer, father Herman Mohn, mother Reba (Eldred) Mohn, brother Earl Mohn and beloved grandson William M. Shaffer. She is survived by her daughter Cheri Etling and husband George Etling of Swoope; son Gary Shaffer and wife Gale Shaffer of Narrowsburg with their three children, Richie, Christine and Lloyd and their families; and daughter Debra Schueler and husband Harold Schueler of Dingmans Ferry, PA with their two children, Annaliese and Erika and her husband. She also leaves behind her brother William Mohn and wife Judy, of Beach Lake, PA and sister-in-law Katherine Mohn, of Beach Lake, along with numerous great-grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be a memorial service in her honor at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, with a reception following, at the Central House Family Resort, 81 Milanville Rd. in Beach Lake.
