‘Meet at the Market’ during National Farmers’ Market Week

Posted

LIBERTY, NY — The Sullivan Catskills Farmers’ Markets collective of 11 individual markets invites the community to celebrate farmers’ markets during National Farmers’ Market Week, August 4 through 10.

The markets have special activities or events scheduled, including live music, cooking demos and more.

Shopping at farmers’ markets can help you meet wellness goals, keep to a budget, talk to farmers and find quality food.

Another highlight during Market Week is accessibility during a time of inflation and rising food costs. Fresh, locally grown produce and other goods are often comparable in price to that found at grocers, a spokesperson for Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County said. “Many markets participate in programs that make this high-quality food more accessible than ever to seniors and those receiving benefits such as SNAP/EBT or WIC.”

For example, an individual using SNAP/EBT at the market can double the amount they can spend through FreshConnect coupons.

“Farmers’ markets are at the heart of our community, and all are welcome to ‘meet at the market,’” said Melinda Meddaugh, agriculture and food systems issue leader at Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County.
