ELDRED, NY — It all started with a moment of silence in respectful remembrance of Eldred’s recently departed coach, Chris Gonzalez, who tragically passed away in December.

And before the girls’ varsity game of hoops on January 10, the home team Lady Yellowjackets took to the floor against the Lady Lions of Chapel Field wearing warmups in honor of Gonzalez, while the athletic department staff handed out green and gold wrist bands inscribed “Chris ‘Coach’ Gonzalez” to all the spectators.

The Lady Lions outpaced Eldred in the first three frames (10-8, 11-6, 9-8), until, in the final period, Eldred staged a comeback attack, tying it up 33-30 with 4:02 remaining on the game clock.

As the minutes ticked away, the home team’s Jana Reed stepped up to the plate and posted 7 points (3 buckets and a foul shot) to lead the Lady Yellowjackets to their first win of the season, as they defeated Chapel Field 34-32.

Leading scorers: Eldred (Lily Gonzalez—15 points, Jada Reed—13); Chapel Field (Arianna Lopez—15 points, Claire Clason—14).

Eldred (1-1) is coached by Jordan Lepes and assisted by Mary Kate Paulus. Chapel Field (1-4) is helmed by Mike Lee.

“My girls played hard, but I wish we’d walked away with a victory,” said Lady Lions coach Mike Lee.

Jordan Lepes said she thought her squad “played sloppy throughout the entire game,” adding, “But I can’t complain if you wind up getting a win... they played hard and got the momentum back.”
