Lake Superior Beach reopens after unhealthy algae bloom

Posted

BETHEL, NY — Lake Superior Beach, which had closed on Tuesday, August 6, because of an unhealthy algae bloom, reopened on Saturday, August 10.

The lake is located in Lake Superior State Park in Bethel, NY. Sullivan County last week to temporarily suspended swimming and boat rentals to protect the public.

“Cyanobacteria, better known as blue-green algae, has increased to potentially harmful levels at Lake Superior’s beach, due in large part to the ongoing hot weather,” said Brian Scardefield, director of NYS Parks, Recreation and Beautification,  when the beach closed. “People and animals who come in contact with the algae may develop irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract—or nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting if they swallow any of it.”

The park continues to be open for picnicking, hiking, and land-based recreation. A public boat launch is available.

Visit the county's parks department for information about all of the county’s parks.
