July is Ice Cream Month

There's nothing like ice cream on a hot summer day. And now you can make your own, even without an ice-cream freezer.

Ice cream in a bag

1 cup half-and-half

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

3 cups ice

1/3 cup kosher salt

Toppings of your choice

In a small resealable plastic bag, combine half-and-half, sugar and vanilla. Push out excess air and seal.

In a large resealable plastic bag, combine ice and salt. Place small bag inside the bigger bag and shake vigorously, 7-10 minutes, until ice cream has hardened.

Remove from bag and enjoy with your favorite ice cream toppings.

Did you know July is recognized as Ice Cream Month? But why July?

In July 1984, President Ronald Reagan called ice cream “a nutritious and wholesome food,” and established National Ice Cream Month for the month of July.

Here are some interesting facts about ice cream. The United States produces more than 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and frozen desserts each year—that’s about 23 quarts per person.

Ice cream is summer’s most popular treat.

It takes 12 pounds of milk to make one gallon of ice cream.

Chocolate and vanilla ice cream are the most popular ice cream flavors.
