Frozen pipes disrupt water systems

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — The wintry weather over the holiday season, along with frigid temperatures hovering near zero degrees, caused water pipes in some unoccupied homes to freeze and break. This affected the communities of Fawn Lake Forest, Masthope and Woodloch Springs, as well as the Woodloch Pines Resort. According to a spokesperson for Aqua Pennsylvania, their team noticed water levels dropping significantly earlier in the week.

Aqua Pennsylvania is the public utility serving these communities.

While tracking down the source of the problem, the company trucked in water to the affected communities over several days. Additionally, according to the spokesperson, the company immediately notified the Pike County 911 Communications Center, which contacted local fire departments on December 27, 2022.

In these situations, the spokesperson said, the fire department can adjust how it responds to extinguish fires, thanks to advance notice and coordination.

On December 30, 2022, Aqua sent out a water conservation notice to customers and directly reached out to the managers of the homeowner’s association in each affected community. The information was communicated to customers via Aqua’s SmartWater alert by phone, text and email. Alerts were also posted to the website and on Facebook.

The leaks were repaired and the water conservation notice was lifted on January 4.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while our team worked diligently to resolve this situation. We encourage our customers to sign up for Aqua’s WaterSmart alerts for quick, reliable communication about water quality and service disruptions. Our WaterSmart alerts are delivered by phone, text, or email,” the company stated.
