Exploring unusual railroad history

SHINHOPPLE, NY — The Colchester Historical Society will host a free program on unusual New York State railroad history on Saturday, October 28 at 2 p.m. at the Shinhopple Memorial Center’s historic log church building.

Fleischmann historian John A. Duda will present the program.

“The audience will learn some odd bits of railroad history that they may not have seen or heard before, including a five-mile railroad that was built in just two weeks, a railroad insurrection that was led by a group of farmers, three incline railways and one that was private,” he said.

The recent rails-to-trails trend will also be included.

An exhibit of Colchester’s own Delaware and Eastern/Northern Railroad photographs and artifacts will show the great impact the railroad had on the development of Colchester and the East Branch River Valley.
