Microcredentials at SUNY Sullivan

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — It’s a chance to learn some key skills in short order: SUNY Sullivan is adding four new microcredentials to its offerings for the spring 2024 semester, beginning Monday, January 22: basic bookkeeping, restaurant management, stagehand work and event planning.

In addition to these new programs, SUNY Sullivan will continue to offer its tax preparer and phlebotomy microcredentials, both of which were introduced during the fall 2023 semester.

Microcredentials are designed to be completed in a shorter timeframe than a typical college degree, and each has immediate value by providing in-demand skills and knowledge. In most cases, each microcredential can be applied to one-year certificates or two-year associate degrees.

SUNY Sullivan’s phlebotomy microcredential, for example, can be stacked into the college’s one-year medical assistant certificate and/or its medical assistant AAS degree.

“New Yorkers of all professional backgrounds can obtain the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for, more immediately and flexibly than a traditional college course load allows,” said Dr. Jennifer Wrage, SUNY Sullivan dean of student success and workforce development.

A recent Coursera survey of nearly 5,000 students and employers across 11 countries found that employers both recognize and value industry microcredentials. According to survey results, employers are on average 72 percent more likely to hire a candidate who has earned a microcredential.
