Town adds fire hydrants, false-alarm laws

TOWN OF FALLSBURG, NY — The Town of Fallsburg is taking steps to bolster fire safety and support its dedicated volunteer firefighters, deputy supervisor Dr. Sean Wall-Carty said.
Ten new fire hydrants will be installed each year throughout the town, and the town is looking into adding dry fire hydrants.
In addition, the town has approved new false-alarm laws aimed at curbing unnecessary disruptions and ensuring the availability of resources for genuine emergencies.
These initiatives underscore the town’s commitment to public safety and the invaluable contributions of its volunteer firefighters, Wall-Carty said. He added that supervisor Kathy Rappaport spearheaded the initiative.
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents is our utmost priority, and a plan for the installation of dry fire hydrants is a substantial step towards achieving that goal,” said Rappaport. “These standard and dry fire hydrants will not only improve our firefighting capabilities, but also provide peace of mind to our community, knowing that we are taking proactive measures to protect their lives and property.”
Dry fire hydrants, unlike traditional hydrants, do not rely on a connected water supply but instead draw water from nearby sources such as ponds, lakes or reservoirs.
The innovative approach allows for greater flexibility in hydrant placement, significantly expanding the town’s firefighting capabilities, Wall-Carty said.
The installation of these fire hydrants will be carried out across Fallsburg to maximize accessibility for emergency responders.
The investment in critical infrastructure will enable firefighters to respond more efficiently to emergencies and better protect the community, Wall-Carty said.
In addition to the installation of fire hydrants, the Town of Fallsburg has also introduced new false alarm laws designed to reduce the strain on the resources of its volunteer fire department.
These laws will help address the issue of false alarms and ensure that firefighters can allocate their time and efforts where they are most needed.
“False alarms can divert essential resources away from genuine emergencies and place unnecessary strain on our volunteer firefighters. Our new false alarm laws are designed to address this issue while still maintaining a high level of service and safety for our residents,” Rappaport said.
The Town of Fallsburg encourages all residents and businesses to familiarize themselves with these new laws to help maintain the effectiveness and availability of firefighting resources within the community.
The initiatives will help support the town’s volunteer firefighters, Wall-Carty said. The town encourages all to join their local volunteer firefighters.
