MONTICELLO, NY and ONLINE — The Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library has begun to record oral histories of local individuals who have interesting personal stories and life experiences.

Those being interviewed come from the service area of the library, including the towns of Bethel, Forestburgh and Thompson.

Several individuals have already recorded their histories, which depict a diverse and interesting series of experiences growing up in and around Monticello.

Dr. Robert J. Kaiser grew up in Kiamesha and worked in the Monticello Central School District for five decades. He ultimately served as superintendent.

Henry and Gordon MacAdam grew up in Monticello in a family whose history in this area goes back to the 1850s.

Robert Schock grew up and worked in the Kiamesha Lake area, and his research on climate change earned him a share of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Joyce Salimeno was born in Callicoon and talks about her accomplishments as a successful businesswoman in Sullivan County.

Sullivan County Historian John Conway shares the history of Monticello from its founding in 1804 through its first century of tanning, timber and tourism. In a second installment, Conway recounts area developments in the 20th century, including railroads, resorts and the raceway.

Les Kristt talks about growing up in Monticello in the 1950s and 60s and later joining his family business and giving back to the community.

These oral histories can be found on the library’s YouTube page at www.youtube.com/@ebcplmonticellony5929/featured. Click on the Videos link.

Anyone interested in contributing to this project or sharing their local history should contact the library at 845/794-4660 ext. 9.
