Commemorating the Civil War-era train wreck

SHOHOLA, PA — The annual Shohola Civil War train wreck commemoration will take place at Rohman’s Pub in Shohola at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 15.

The program includes a medley of Civil War music by The Bethel Three and reveille and taps, played by Ryan Collaruso.

Chuck Mercer will play the part of a Confederate prisoner and give his account of the tragic train wreck on July 15, 1864, when a coal train collided with a prison train near Shohola.

The prison train was en route to a Confederate prison camp in Elmira, NY.

A picture of a plaque that had been placed at the site of the wreck will be presented to Rohman’s for display. Sadly, the original plaque was stolen from its location in late 2022 and has never been recovered.

All are invited to attend the event.
