GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — An event celebrating Camp Woodland—and featuring memories, stories and Catskill folk music—will be held on Sunday, August 25 at 2 p.m. at the Time and the Valleys Museum on State Route 55.
From 1939 to 1962, Camp Woodland operated in the Woodland Valley outside of Phoenicia and was a gathering place for local musicians, storytellers and artisans who participated in musical and dramatic performances that celebrated the cultural resources of the region.
Bill Horne, author of “The Improbable Community: A Book about Camp Woodland,” about the history and music collection efforts of Camp Woodland, and folk musician Pat Lamanna, an alumna of the camp, will appear. They and local musicians will present a program of live music based on songs collected in the Catskills, and recount the Camp Woodland preservation efforts.
Pat Lamanna is a folksinger-songwriter based in the Hudson Valley. Her time at Camp Woodland taught her to love singing and love what music can teach about emotions.
Lamanna began learning guitar as a Woodlander. Her early exposure to Pete Seeger developed into a friendship toward the end of his life.
Time and the Valleys Museum is located at 332 Main St.
Admission costs $5 per person and is free of charge for museum members. In-person attendance also includes admission to the museum’s exhibitions and the shop as well as light refreshments.
Music CDs and the book “Improbable Community” will be available for sale.
