MONTICELLO, NY — Petitions are available for the October 11 election of trustees at the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library.

Five board seats are up for election: 

Two seats for full three-year terms (1/1/24-12/31/26) 

One seat for the remaining two years of a three-year term (1/1/24-12/31/25) 

Two seats for the remaining one year of two three-year terms (1/1/24-12/31/24) 

Incumbents Rebecca Kemp (two-year terms) and Richard Arnold (one-year term) are seeking reelection. Maureen O’Meara (three-year term), Marcia Raponi (three-year term) and Melanie Olson (one-year term) are not seeking reelection. 

Pick up a petition from the election secretary at the library if you are an eligible voter.

Eligible voters reside within the library service area (the Town of Forestburgh, Bethel or Thompson within the Monticello Central School District). 

Petitions must be returned to the library by 5 p.m. on Monday, September 11.

Kost Tire donates bike repair station

FOREST CITY, PA — A new bike repair station was recently installed on the Erie Street Trailhead of the D&H Rail Trail. 

The station was donated by Kost Tire and was the result of a partnership with Kost Tire, the Rail-Trail Council and the Forest City Outdoor Town Action Team.

The repair stations feature a stand to allow a rider to mount a bicycle and contains basic tools needed to perform do-it-yourself bicycle repairs. It also features a heavy-duty bicycle pump with a pump head for both Schrader and Presta valves.

Kost Tire & Auto Service is celebrating 85 years in business and traces its roots to Forest City.

WVIA receives 11 Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmy Award® Nominations

PITTSTON, PA — Local public television station WVIA has been nominated by the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for 11 Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmy® Awards.

It is a station record—the highest number in WVIA’s 57-year history.

Learn how to create a public space

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — Sullivan 180 is partnering with the Catskill Hospitality Institute to offer a new course at SUNY Sullivan during the fall 2023 semester.

The course, titled Creating and Activating Public Spaces, will introduce students to the importance of public spaces for community health and wellness; explain careers and opportunities associated with creating and caring for public spaces, facilities and grounds, parks and Main Streets; and give an understanding of the effort to engage citizens in placemaking and creating public spaces.

Placemaking is an approach to planning, designing and managing public spaces with the intention of using a community’s assets, inspiration and potential to create public spaces that improve community vitality and promote health and wellness.

HUM 1350: Creating and Activating Public Spaces, is running this fall on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.

Greater Pike awards nearly $100,000 to 31 area nonprofits 

MILFORD, PA – A diverse array of programs—from portable lighting that will improve nighttime rescues to  therapeutic equipment for children and adults with developmental disabilities and local theatre productions that illustrate our area’s history—are among the 31 initiatives that will receive funding from Greater Pike Community Foundation’s Richard L. Snyder Fund. 

The projects will address health and wellness initiatives; enhance and beautify public spaces and support local arts and cultural events and programs. 

Programs addressing such health issues as epilepsy, autism, developmental disabilities, therapeutic programs, homelessness and more will receive over $35,000 in grants.

The grants will fund sports fields, park beautification and decorative trash containers.

Eighteen cultural programs will receive grants to support musical performances, living history programs, wildlife and environmental programs, literary and film events, dance programs and more.
