William Wesley Langhorst passed away on April 18, 2018 at the NYS Veteran’s Home at Oxford, NY. He was 94.

Wes (Bill) was the son of William A. and Lizzie (Ropke) Langhorst. The family moved when he was 12 years old from Livingston, NJ to the then countryside of New Windsor, NY, near Newburgh, where he graduated from Cornwall Central High School. In addition to academic success, he was a standout in soccer and baseball. He served his country honorably on the European front during World War II as a gunner calculator in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Upon discharge, he joined his parents in Binghamton, NY, where his father had joined Gus Langhorst’s Fish Market Company. Bill then resumed his studies at Cornell University, played on the Cornell soccer team, and in 1949 graduated from Cornell’s School of Engineering with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. After graduating, he enjoyed a 36-year career as a civil engineer with the NYS Department of Transportation, where he worked state-wide in New York State’s highway construction program.

He had a lifelong interest in all things mechanical, structural and technological. Bridge design was a particular favorite, as were the Yankees. He was an accomplished photographer, who had his own darkroom at an early age. He was also an avid outdoorsman, who loved to ski and fish. Wes was a faithful son who cared for his mother until her passing at the age of 99. He was predeceased by his father, William, and his best friend, Ronald Linderman. Ron’s family grieves and extends their many thanks to the wonderful staff at the NYS Veterans’ Home at Oxford for making Bill’s stay there comfortable over the past three years, with special thanks to the staff of the Oak Unit and the physical therapy department who attended him.
