Narrowsburg News 12/19/18
The single-digit countdown has begun. Christmas is next Tuesday and we’re in full holiday mode at our house. We baked and decorated cut-out cookies last weekend. We’ve watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” twice already (it’s streaming on Amazon). And my parents just arrived with their sleigh (aka Chevy Silverado pick-up truck) full of goodies, including a balsam Christmas tree freshly cut from the woods of Wisconsin. Have I crossed everything off my list? I think so, but I have a few more shopping days, in case I forgot something.
Santa Express, a Christmas tour of Santa Claus and his North Pole friends, will be in front of the Narrowsburg Union at 7 Erie Ave. on December 23 at 7 p.m. (postponed due to weather from December 16). Santa Express travels hundreds of miles visiting towns in Sullivan and Orange counties every December, spreading the magic of Christmas to people of all ages.
Most shops and restaurants in town are open normal or extended hours this weekend to accommodate last minute holiday shoppers, and then will close Monday to Wednesday, December 24 to 26 so the owners and staff members can enjoy some holiday time off with their families. I see that the restaurants in town are posting on Facebook and Instagram about special post-Christmas weekend hours and New Year Eve parties.
The Heron at 40 Main St. is open December 27 to 30, plus New Years Eve and day. The Emerald Ballroom, just below the restaurant, will have live music and hors d’oeuvres on New Year’s Eve. The Heron will close January 2 through 10. The Laundrette at 20 5th St. is throwing a New Year’s Jam on Monday, December 31 starting at 8 p.m. with food until 10 p.m., followed by music and drinks to ring in the new year. Throughout the winter, Uncle Vinny’s at 251 Bridge St. has an amazing outdoor fire pit on the patio to gather around and enjoy a glass of wine or a cappuccino. Check Uncle Vinny’s social media for holiday hours and specials. Henning’s Local at 6 Old County Rd., Cochecton Center is offering three seatings on New Year’s Eve and has a special decadent menu that includes lobster bisque, caviar, filet mignon and crepes. The Cochecton Fire Station 1 Depot Rd., Cochecton, will be closed from December 24 through January 1. They will resume normal hours on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.
If you’re looking for a last minute gift, all of these restaurants offer gift certificates, which is a great way to delight your friends and loved ones, and support local businesses at the same time.
Happy holidays everyone!
