Women in Military monument to be dedicated

HONESDALE, PA — A dedication of the Women in Military monument in Honesdale is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, on the grounds of the Wayne County Courthouse.

The monument will accompany other military remembrances at the site. The keynote speaker is Brigadier Gen. (PA) Maureen Weigl, who retired from the army in 2016 after serving 25 years. She was appointed the Deputy Adjutant for Veterans Affairs in 2021.

Following the dedication, “The History of Women in the Military” will be presented at the Cooperage on Main Street in Honesdale. Photos and displays will be available at 12 noon, and a half-hour presentation by Janice Gavern begins at 1 p.m.

The force behind the monument is resident Kim Erickson, history buff and advocate for service men and women.

“My grandfather and my father were Veterans,” she said. “I have lots of respect for anyone who gives selflessly for others, for our freedom.”

The accomplishments she initiated or helped make happen include the Tour of Honor for World War II veterans in 2007, American Veterans Traveling Tribute (Vietnam Wall) in Hawley in 2009, Wayne County Walk of Honor (adjacent to the courthouse) and Honoring Our Heroes Banners in Honesdale.
