Wear your life jacket to work, May 17

NARROWSBURG, NY — When you get dressed for work next Friday, top off your outfit with the ultimate fashion accessory: a life jacket.

The Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River wants to raise awareness about the importance of wearing life jackets every time you’re on the river—whether swimming, boating, or fishing.

“Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day” on May 17 is hosted annually by the National Safe Boating Council as a fun and educational way to kick off National Safe Boating Week, May 18-24.

The park service encourages everyone to take a picture of themselves wearing their life jacket while at work and post it on social media along with the hashtags #lifejacketatwork and #safeboating on the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River’s Facebook page and Instagram.

There have been 78 drownings on the Upper Delaware River since 1980, and none of these drownings occurred when the person was wearing a properly fitted life jacket, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

Drowning was the reported cause of death in 75 percent of all boating fatalities, according to the most recent U.S. Coast Guard statistics. Of those drowning victims, 85 percent were not wearing a life jacket.

“Safety on the water is everyone’s responsibility,” says the park service. “Wearing a life jacket can save your life.”
