NARROWSBURG, NY — Three friends Albert Doria, left, Brett Burkle and Dani Van Stone were delighted to cut the ribbon at Tri Amici Ristorante Italiano at 251 Bridge Street this past weekend. They celebrated with friends, family and restaurant diners at their grand opening celebration June 1.

‘Whisperers and Witnesses’

BEACH LAKE, PA — Wendy Kaplan will present the film “Whisperers and Witnesses” this Sunday, June 9 at 10:15 a.m. at the Berlin Township Community Center.

The film explores the conservation work of Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue and Ape Action Africa as they fight to save great apes from extinction. Wendy Stuart Kaplan and her husband Alan travelled to Cameroon and produced this 40-minute documentary, which won Best Documentary Short at the Chelsea Film Festival.

Homestead School students to display ethical, environmental, micro-business projects

GLEN SPEY, NY — For the past three years, eighth-grade students at the private Montessori Homestead School have been developing entrepreneurial potential through their micro-business projects.

Each student over the course of the year develops a business concept, company mission, brand identity and then proceeds to develop a product or a line of products in line with those ideas. This year, the projects will be on display at the Homestead School’s open house Saturday, June 8 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 428 Hollow Rd.

The students use a wide range of design software to create prototypes of their products on the classroom’s 3D printers and laser cutter. Representatives from the Homestead School say that the idea is to use materials that are ethically and environmentally sound—fair trade and organic whenever possible.

Over the past few years, students have designed a wide range of products including laser-cut lamps, night lights, cell phone covers and power chord organizers; handmade leashes and collars; soaps and skin care products; and teas. The students donate 70% of their profits to a charity of their choice. Students have raised more than $11,000 to benefit a wide range of causes including environmental protection, women’s rights, suicide prevention and animal rescue operations.

Supporting adult literacy

MONTICELLO, NY — The Read-It-Again Bookstore at 63 North St. is once again having a $5 children’s bag sale. For $5, everyone is invited to fill a large paper bag with children’s books.

Volunteers of Sullivan County. In the last six months, this group has helped five students receive their high school equivalency diploma, four become U.S. citizens and encouraged one to write a book of their own.

Electric car-charging station unveiled in Honesdale

HONESDALE, PA — The Greater Honesdale Partnership unveiled an electric car-charging station recently and celebrated its use last weekend. The charging station is located at the Fred Miller Pavilion on Main and Seventh streets in Honesdale and was financed using a $10,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. 

James Manning House to celebrate 200th anniversary

BETHANY, PA — On Sunday, June 9 from 1 to 3 p.m., Warren and Janet Heinly, current owners of the house, will host an anniversary open house. Guests are invited to tour the rooms, grounds and extensive gardens, and learn about the early days of the house and the Bethany area. Throughout the property, guests will be offered appetizer and dessert samples prepared by members from the Manning and Heinly families.

Walk through Callicoon’s history

CALLICOON, NY — The first of this summer’s historic walking tours of Callicoon was held last Saturday in town, with another to follow at the end of the month.

The tours take attendees through the history of the town and include ghost stories. The rest of the tours will take place June 22, July 6 and 20; Aug. 3, 17 and 18; Sept. 7 and 21 and Oct. 12. Tours begin at PAO! 25 Lower Main St. at 11:30 a.m. and take about an hour. The tour costs $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
