MIDDLETOWN, NY — River Reporter sports columnist, photographer and journalist Ted Waddell was honored by the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA) on Sunday, December 11.

He received the Phil Pines award at the organization’s 63rd annual awards banquet, held at the Wallkill Golf Club.

Pines wrote “The Complete Book of Harness Racing,” and was the longtime director of the Harness Racing Museum and its Hall of Fame.

Waddell has been writing and shooting award-winning stories and photos for area newspapers for many years, covering everything from sports to emergency services to school graduations. In 2022, he wrote stories on the women of harness racing at the Monticello Raceway. He has also profiled the people who work behind the scenes, making the races possible.
