SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Sullivan County brought in $22.86 million in sales tax during the first quarter of 2024—a 12.9 percent increase over the same quarter last year, according to a report by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

By contrast, neighboring Orange County saw a slight decrease in sales tax revenue.

Statewide, local government sales tax collections totaled $5.6 billion during the first quarter, marking a 1.6 percent increase from the same quarter last year, according to the report. New York City’s 3.2 percent increase reflects a strong tourism industry and a rebound in hospitality, while several upstate regions experienced a decline in collections, the report said.

Sales tax revenue growth in the Mid-Hudson region overall was 3.8 percent: Growth in Dutchess County was 2.8 percent; Putnam, 0.8 percent; Ulster, 3.9 percent; and Westchester, 8.2 percent. In Rockland, it dropped 2.3 percent.

The rest of the state saw virtually flat first-quarter collections, with some counties experiencing growth and others facing declines.  Westchester County had the strongest growth, behind Sullivan, at 12.7 percent, while Yates County had the steepest decline at -7.1 percent. Outside of New York City, 12 out of 18 cities imposing their own sales tax experienced year-over-year growth.

Overall, the report indicates a modest year-over-year growth in local sales tax collections, driven largely by New York City’s resurgence in tourism and hospitality, while other regions faced various economic influences affecting their collections.
