Kopelman-Feigelson duo at Grey Towers

MILFORD, PA — Violinist Mikhail Kopelman and cellist Yosif Feigelson will perform duets by Beethoven, George Frideric Handel and Zoltan Kodaly at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at Grey Towers National Historic Site.
The “Tea for Two” concert will take place outdoors under a large canopy at the pool pavilion.
Kopelman is the former leader of the Tokyo and Borodin string quartets, and Feigelson is an international soloist and the artistic director of Kindred Spirits Arts Programs.
Beethoven wrote this music early in his career, originally for clarinet and bassoon, but it was soon adapted for string duo. “The young composer already shows mastery and imagination,” said Feigelson. “Lots of beauty and youthful vigor, too.”
Handel’s “Passacaglia” is the last movement in a harpsichord suite that 19th-century violinist/composer Johan Halvorsen adapted for a string duo. Kodaly’s “Sonata for Violin and Cello,” written in 1914, was greatly influenced by French Impressionist composers like Debussy and Ravel. He blended these influences with folk melodies of his native Hungary to produce a grand-scale, rhapsodic work, a press release said.
Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased on Eventbrite or in person at the Artisan Exchange.
Seating is limited, so buy tickets soon to secure admission.

 The Walking Purchase of 1737

MILFORD, PA — On Saturday August 20, the Pike County Historical Society and Museum will welcome Frank Salvati, historian and interpreter of Indian affairs.
He will present a lecture on the Walking Purchase of 1737 in the museum’s Foundation Room. The talk begins at 4 p.m.
There is a suggested donation of $5 and refreshments will be served.
The Walking Purchase was a pivotal point in relations between the Delaware (Lenape) Indians and the white settlers. The sons of William Penn, greedy for land, money and minerals as more settlers came into Pennsylvania, perpetrated a fraudulent land grab that would take away much more land than the Lenape intended.
The Penn brothers hired three runners to perform the “walk,” and no one seemed to see how unfair this was, a museum spokesperson said.
Chief Lappawinsoe, a representative of the Lenape Indians who signed the agreement, was furious to find that the Lenape had been cheated out of so much land.
He claimed that the woodsmen “should have walked along the River Delaware or the next Indian path to it… The walkers should have walked for a few miles and then sat down and smoked a pipe, and now and then have shot a squirrel, and not have kept upon the run, run, run all day.”
The Columns also has a new exhibit, titled “The Lenape, Original People: Reconciling the Past, Embracing the Future.”
The museum is open in August on Wednesday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
