Snakeheads: A spreading species

LACKAWAXEN, PA — Konrad Wrona, a fisher with Two River Anglers, reported the catch of a northern snakehead at the Lackawaxen River.

Wrona caught the 31-inch, nine-plus-pound fish at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, while fishing at the Zane Grey boat ramp.

“I believe this to be the first caught at the mouth of the Lackawaxen River showing signs that these fish are becoming more prevalent in the area,” he said.

The non-native, invasive northern snakehead (Channa argus) was first recorded in the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River near Callicoon, NY in August 2020. These predators threaten important native species, and the National Park Service urges anglers to kill them immediately.
